Estheticians: Why Knowing a Good Dermatologist is Necessary?

I am amazed when I meet estheticians who have never gone to a dermatologist, not only do they not go themselves, but they have no dermalogical information to provide their clients. Why is it necessary to know a dermatologist? In my opinion, everyone should see a dermatologist once a year (I am not a doctor-this is just my personal opinion) just for a body scan to make sure there are no suspicious moles on the body...skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers out there, by getting regular exams you increase your survival rates should you have skin cancer. Secondly, the dermatologist's office is like a candy store for a kid for estheticians, this is the office that will introduce you to so many new procedures and products on the market, skin conditions and more importantly knowing your dermatologist gives you the opportunity to ask your doctor questions that are relevant to your every day business. Finally, having a few of your dermatologist's business cards in your spa is helpful to give out to your clients. You never know when you are going to have a client who might request a name of a good dermatologist, or they have a suspicious mole (remember you are not a doctor so do not diagnosis a client, simply say, "You might want to have that looked at by a doctor.") and if you do not have a name of a doctor you will likely lose some credibility. Practice what you preach. Your clients expect that you are professional and you would at least be familiar with a dermalogical practice nearby.

  1. If I had health insurance, sure. My husband and I work hard and we still can't afford it- but we are both going through college to improve our finances. Touchy subject! I don't think not knowing a dermatologist makea you any less of a great professional in this field- just like not knowing Donald Trump (he of course is a successful realtor) makes you a horrible realtor. Not a great example, but I think it gets my point across.

    1. Hi Misty,
Thank you for the comment. While I understand it may be difficult to see a dermatologist right now, there might be ways around going without insurance. You would need to ask around, but sometimes local hospitals do skin cancer screenings for free or low-cost. Unfortunately, skin cancer is one of the most deadly cancers out there, but the survival rates go up dramatically if it is caught early! So this is extremely important. To get to know area doctors, go in the office and hand out your business card to the office manager, and get to know the services they offer. It wouldn't hurt to ask if they offer reduced rates or free one-day skin cancer screenings as well, this is good information for you and your clients.

  2. Misty,
In addition, to your comment about "not knowing a good dermatologist doesn't make you any less of a great professional" I would respectfully disagree. You don't have to be on a best friends basis with a dermatologist, but you should be able to refer your clients to one or two area dermatologists should they need it.You are in skin care, and your clients will expect that you see a dermatologist. We are in the business of taking care of people's skin, and skin cancer screenings are an important component to the overall health of our skin, and I believe it is critical for every esthetician to not only get yearly or bi-yearly skin cancer screenings, but to recommend that their clients do as well. I understand that not every one has health insurance, but many hospitals and doctors offer free skin cancer screenings on a yearly basis. Your comment about the Realtor is insightful, but you can't die from a bad real estate transaction, but you can die from skin cancer. Misty, certainly you are entitled to your opinion, and I appreciate your comment. Thanks for reading.
